An important message about e-books

The Millburn Free Public Library subscribes to several services that give you access to e-books, including eBCCLS, eLibraryNJ, Hoopla, and rbdigital.  These services are accessible 24-7 with your Millburn Library card via the library’s e-Resources page.

In November, one of the world’s largest book publishers, Macmillian, unilaterally instituted a new policy against libraries and library patrons.  Effective November 1st, Macmillan and all of its affiliated imprints enacted a one copy per library embargo against libraries for the first 8 weeks of a new release.

Libraries pay for e-book content and are willing to pay for additional electronic copies of titles in order to keep waiting lists manageable.  Despite this, Macmillan will not sell more than one copy to a library during the first 8 weeks of a title’s publication.

To make matters worse, Macmillan considers library systems and library consortia to be one library.  This means that for all of BCCLS – 77 libraries serving nearly 1,000,000 people – only one copy of a new Macmillan e-book would be available.  The same is true for eLibraryNJ.  Only one copy would be available for the entire network.

This is unfair and is an affront against libraries and library patrons.

In response to this, all of BCCLS and all of eLibraryNJ, including the Millburn Free Public Library, will be boycotting all Macmillan e-book purchases.

We ask you to do the same.
